Heritage and Conservation Advice and Project Management

Cademuir Building Consultants (CBC) were appointed to assist with the replacement of windows to a Category B Listed building in the grounds of a private school in Edinburgh. The building, used as a teaching facility, is 3 storey and of traditional construction with decorative masonry and timber sash and case windows. The upper floor of one wing has a 1960’s extension and the classrooms within suffered from overheating in the summer and being cold and draughty in the winter due to the large single glazed metal framed windows.
CBC advised on conservation and heritage issues associated with replacing the metal framed windows with new, better performing windows. Alternatives were assessed considering options for window frame profiles, double glazing thicknesses and solar reflective qualities. The most appropriate solution was selected based on conservation, performance and economic considerations. Costs were obtained and CBC were retained to provide full Project Management services to deliver the proposals.
Services provided by CBC included:
- Building Survey and Measured Survey.
- Advice on glazing replacement options.
- Advice on associated works including replacement lead weathering apron to cills.
- Listed Building Consent document preparations and application including Heritage Impact Assessment.
- Design and specification of all works, tendering to selected contractors and full procurement services.
- Project Management of project works.
- Contract Administration of the project works.
