Cademuir Building Consultants (CBC) were appointed to Project Manage the reconstruction and repair of two historic garden walls in Melrose, Scottish Borders. Both walls date from the mid-18th century and are within the Melrose Conservation Area. One of the walls is a Category B Listed structure and is within the site area of Melrose Abbey Scheduled Monument.
Services provided by CBC included providing heritage and conservation advice on how best to reconstruct and repair the walls, overseeing input from archaeologists, structural engineers and procuring stone and mortar samples to ensure the reconstruction and repair works replicated the original structures as closely as possible. Works necessitated the construction of new concrete foundations and retaining wall structures.
Total project expenditure was approximately £180,000
Services provided by CBC included:
- Surveys of walls concerned.
- Advice on conservation repairs and reconstruction works.
- Procuring structural engineer, archaeologist and masonry samples.
- Design and specification of all works, tendering to selected contractors and full procurement services.
- Building Warrant drawings and application for wall reconstruction.
- Listed Building Consent and Scheduled Monument Consent applications including Heritage Impact Assessments.
- Project Management of project works.
- Contract Administration of the project works.
